Step #1: Answer the question (thesis)

EX: I believe Brutus is the real tragic hero in Julius Caesar.

Step #2: Transition + example from the text

EX: For example, on page 34, Brutus states, "It's not because I loved Caesar less, but I loved Rome more."

Step #3: Explain/analyze how your example in sentence #2 proves your thesis

EX: Brutus loved Caesar, but had to kill him for the good of Rome. The fact that he had to choose                                                                                 between killing his best friend and saving the people makes him a true tragic hero because heroes often have to make                                             personal sacrifices for the greater good.

Step #4: Transition + example from the text

EX: Another example that shows Brutus is a tragic hero is when he is willing to believe Cassius: "I

believe I must act because Caesar is a tyrant" (17).

Step #5: Explain/analyze how your example in sentence #4 proves your thesis

EX: In this example, Brutus has finally given into Cassius' persuasion. Most tragic heroes have a tragic                                                                          flaw which leads to death. For Brutus, his trusting nature led to him killing his best friend and, eventually, himself.

    Step #6: Conclusion/Recap Sentence #1

EX: In conclusion, Brutus is the true tragic hero of Julius Caesar due to the examples above.

The complete SAR would read like this:

I believe Brutus is the real tragic hero in Julius Caesar. For example, on page 34, Brutus states, "It's not because I loved Caesar less, but I loved Rome more." Brutus loved Caesar, but had to kill him for the good of Rome. The fact that he had to choose between killing his best friend and saving the people makes him a true tragic hero because heroes often have to make personal sacrifices for the greater good. Another example that shows Brutus is a tragic hero is when he is willing to believe Cassius: "I believe I must act because Caesar is a tyrant" (17). In this example, Brutus has finally given into Cassius' persuasive ways. Most tragic heroes have a tragic flaw which leads to their death; for Brutus, his trusting nature led to him killing his best friend and, eventually, himself. In conclusion, Brutus is the true tragic hero of Julius Caesar due to personal sacrifice and his trusting nature.
